Ship Accommodation Cleaning in Batam: Scope, HSE Standards & Full Checklist

After docking or repairs, a vessel's accommodation must be habitable again before the crew boards. Ship accommodation cleaning is the thorough cleaning of crew living and working spaces—and in a shipyard it has to run alongside yard schedules and safety rules.

Areas covered by ship accommodation cleaning

  • Crew & officer cabins: ceilings, walls, furniture, floors/carpets and windows.
  • Toilets, showers & laundry: scale, water stains, drains and stainless surfaces.
  • Galley & pantry: stainless surfaces, racks, hoods and anti-slip floors.
  • Chillers & freezers: stainless racks and walls, floors, ice residue and stains.
  • Mess room, hospital & bridge: furniture, panels, glass and floors.
  • Corridors & stairs: walls, handrails and floors.

HSE standards in the shipyard

Working in a shipyard is different from a regular building. Crews must attend safety induction, hold a permit to work and wear full PPE: helmets, coveralls, safety shoes, gloves and goggles. A manpower list with worker IDs is normally submitted to the yard before mobilisation.

Commonly used equipment

  • Floor polishers and scrubbers for mess room and corridor floors.
  • Wet & dry vacuums for cabin carpets and standing water.
  • Dedicated chemicals: metal polish for stainless, degreaser for the galley, glass and carpet cleaners.
  • Manual tools: mops, squeegees, brushes and microfiber cloths.

Pre-delivery checklist

  1. All cabins free of dust on ceilings, walls and furniture.
  2. Toilets and showers free of scale; drains flowing.
  3. Stainless surfaces in galley, pantry and chillers shiny with no grease marks.
  4. Corridor and mess room floors clean and not slippery.
  5. Rubbish and leftover materials removed from accommodation.
  6. Before–after documentation and work done report signed by the vessel's representative.

How long does it take?

Duration depends on the number of spaces and the vessel's condition. As an example, accommodation with around 20 crew cabins and 18 toilets can be completed by an 8-person team within a matter of working days. An initial survey helps set a realistic schedule.
