Duct & HVAC Cleaning: 7 Signs Your Building or Vessel Air Ducts Need Cleaning

Air ducts are out of sight, but you feel their condition every day. Here is how to tell when they are due for cleaning.

Duct & HVAC Cleaning: 7 Signs Your Building or Vessel Air Ducts Need Cleaning

Duct and HVAC systems run non-stop in offices, hotels, hospitals and vessel accommodation. Because they are hidden above the ceiling, dirt is usually noticed only after it causes problems. Watch out for these seven signs.

7 signs your ducts and HVAC need cleaning

1. Black dust around diffusers

Dark stains on the ceiling around diffusers show that dust is already being blown out of the ducts.

2. Musty smell when the AC is on

Moisture and dust inside ducts allow mould and bacteria to grow, causing odours.

3. Rooms stay warm even though the AC works

Clogged filters and returns restrict airflow, so rooms struggle to reach the set temperature.

4. Rising electricity bills

A clogged system works harder and longer, increasing energy consumption.

5. Occupants sneeze or feel irritation

Circulating dust, spores and allergens affect the comfort and health of occupants and crew.

6. Recent renovation or docking works

Construction dust easily enters air ducts during renovation or docking—the perfect time for duct cleaning.

7. No cleaning for a long time

If nobody remembers when the ducts were last cleaned, they are almost certainly due for an inspection.

How does duct cleaning work?

  1. Survey & inspection: identify areas (diffusers, returns, spiral ducts, AHU room) and the number of units.
  2. Preparation & protection: cover furniture and floors, wear PPE and obtain permits on board.
  3. Cleaning: remove and wash diffusers, clean ducts with blowers, vacuums and dedicated brushes.
  4. Quality control: supervisor inspection with before–after documentation.
  5. Work report: units per area as the handover record.

Experience on board

The PT NIA team has cleaned diffusers, returns and spiral ducts across the bridge, officer deck, AHU room, galley and mess room of a vessel in a Batam shipyard, complete with a work done report signed by the ship.
